Night & Day: a children’s anthology
Little Green Pig
The brief
We were asked by our client Little Green Pig (based in Brighton & Hove), and their sister organisation, writing charity Grimm & Co (based in Rotherham) to create a night & day themed-book.
It was also a fairly complex project, with many children involved and two separate teams feeding into the brief: half the book was to contain prose and poetry on the theme of night, written by children attending Little Green Pig’s writing clubs in Brighton & Hove, and half was to contain day-themed prose and poetry, written by children attending Grimm & Co’s writing clubs in Rotherham.
Night & Day is a showcase of the work made by the young writers and also an invitation to write for the kids that pick it up. It is a book that can be read from back to front or front to back, with two contrasting themes needing equal impact.
What we delivered
The purpose of the book was to celebrate the writing of the many children involved. In that sense, our job was to design a concept that framed and enhanced their work. We developed a collage-style concept, using ripped craft paper to give the book a tactile look & feel. The collages are inspired by the visual imagery borne out of the poetry and prose within the book.
The book is printed onto uncoated stock, to enhance the effect of the ripped paper collages, and to make it easy for the children to write on, as the book is populated with spaces for children to develop their pieces of writing.
Essentially two books in one, Night & Day has two front covers, to reflect the different themes and sets of writing.
