Six Boxes – a graphic comic anthology

Little Green Pig

The brief

We were asked by our client Little Green Pig (a children’s writing based in Brighton & Hove) to design a book to house an anthology of graphic comic stories produced by their after school clubs. The project was called Six Boxes as the children were each given six boxes in which to write and illustrate their stories.

What we delivered

We developed a set of different templates (each containing 6 boxes) for the children to use in creating their stories. This ensured there was some variety to the page format inside the anthology.

We created a simple cover design, borrowing the familiar dot pattern from the world of comics as the background. We used a comic-style font for the Six Boxes book title, applying a 3D type treatment and using the Little Green Pig brand green as well as introducing a secondary yellow.

What the client said

“As ever, the Sherlock team were supportive and hugely helpful from the start. It was important that we decided what the best format would be for the final book before beginning the workshops, and Sherlock created some excellent templates for the children to work on from their very first sessions. We were thrilled to hear that there are comic book fans amongst the Sherlock team- and this totally translated into the playful designs they produced for us.

Quite a departure from the look of our previous publications, the Six Boxes book design is fresh and fun – capturing the energy and imagination of the comics with style and appeal. Throughout the design process, Sherlock were efficient and professional as ever- whilst also being patient, enthusiastic and always very warm. They are a pleasure to work with. We are extremely proud of what the children produced as part of Sis Boxes, and have had incredible feedback for the gorgeous book that Sherlock have made.” Emily Hogan, Deputy Director, Little Green Pig
